Dialogue is the only Healthy Paradigm to Achieve Peace

October 29th, 2007

by Ranjit Emerson

As I read the article and the comments, I am left with an impression, we are just exercising racialism and shallow thinking. Whether we are Sinhalese or Tamils, we are all Srilankans. What we have lost is not 21 black tigers and 14 airforce personnel, but 35 Srilankans, our national wealth. The forefathers of this nation built this country to provide free education and health systems to those fallen heros. Every person that is killed is lost of national wealth.

All those damages that were done were not the property of the political leaders, but it is the property of all Srilankans. We have lost lives, we have lost properties. Like in the Philippines during Marcos’ time, every citizen of SL must rise against, the political leaders, who fail to bring peace to this beautiful country. Our Srilankans can rise up and dispose leaders who can not rule this nation without peace. We see now political leaders are not afraid to practice nepotism, and accumulate wealth for them. They are in a safe secured place, while the farmers’ children, and sons & daughters of humble families are sacrificing the their lives because of poverty.

The Srilankan army could have crippled the military uprising of the Tamils, in the beginning, if they did not terrorise the Tamils both in the North and East. It is because of the intimidation of the Srilankan army and arresting innocent Tamil school going children separated Tamils of the North and East from them. It is at this junction, LTTE became the sole protector of the victimized Tamils. When the atrocities increased against the Tamils of the North and East by the government forces, the innocent Tamil civilians became defend less people. They became vulnerable to continuous violence performed by the government forces.

When LTTE came and offered protection, naturally, they began to support LTTE. In other words, LTTE earned the support of the Tamils by protecting them. So it is the poor politics and governance of South political leaders gave birth to LTTE. It is very imprudent to think that militarism can obliterate LTTE. But it is actually creating more LTTEs than before.

Further more, the grievances of Tamil people in Sri Lanka has been categorized as terrorism. Some Western World leaders have voiced this misinterpretation in their political platform. Instead of analysing our country’s present situation, our political leaders have rather condemned such opinions of the Western World and determined to carry on their own thinking, which only profits them and not the people of Sri Lanka. As a result, we are struggling politically, economically and psychologically. This war has created many single parents, fatherless children, and cripples (physically) society.

Tamils are Srilankans. They are part of Sri Lanka’s wealth. The cardinal priority of our nation is to solve our minorities’ issues to accomplish peace. This can’t be achieved through militarism because violence begets only violence–this is a universal fact. By using militarism, we are only suppressing one of the symptoms of the Tamils’ infringements, but not the core problem. So dialogue is only healthy paradigm to achieve peace. If we fail to implement this dialogue now, it will be extremely impossible to achieve peace in the future. If our leaders fail to dialogue now, we will make our country like Sudan or Somalia. We were once called the Paradise of the East, now we are become the ‘Hades of the East.’

Excellent article. Even though it is too late it is great that people have started thinking about the real facts of the problem. Gold medal to the writer.

Patriotics are not amongst the politician but amongst the ordinary people and armed forces. People are prevented from thinking towards the correct path by the politician because once the ordinary people starts thinking then in such a situation certain politician will have to go back home or revert back to their odd jobs in foreign countries or become unemployed. Politics has become a lucrative jobs for some politicians who have become billionaires by prosecuting war. Even though we have high degree of literacy, only learned people contribute to destroy minority in their mother land.

    Federal System in Sri Lanka

    Excellent article. I wish to further state in this context;
that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam are not problems generated or created by the Tamils. The creation of the LTTE is consequential to the racist policies of the successive governments such as Sinhala only Act, Colonization in Tamil areas and Standardization. Wiping out the LTTE will not solve the problems either. The solution lies not in dumping the country with all kinds of arms, bombarding civilian areas, not in forcing young people to arm themselves to kill their own people. I gather Tamils and Sinhalese and Muslim still belong to each other, but in making it possible for all the people to live in peace and good relationship.

Before the European conquerors arrived on our horizon our people enjoyed a civilized system of government very much decentralized and quite healthy too. We have to go back to that which today would be equivalent to a federal system

It is an excellent artical. I understand that Srilankans begin to think about their nation. There is no doubt that Srilanka is a perl of Asia; it is not late to solve the ethnic conflicts and establish peace. if peace come. Srilanka will be a wealthy country in Asia ideed.Srilanka will be better than Singapore that will be an example for the other nations. Some countries gain money by selling their wepons and we loose our wealth and intellegent teens wether Sinhalese or Tamil , both are belong to Srilanka’s valuable children. Good bless Srilankan.

Thank you Hon.Ranjit Emerson to open srilanka’s politicians eyes.

I for one, is all for peace but there must be justice, fair play and equality irrespective of whatever the racial origin. I am sure the Tamils all over including the rebels are in the same thinking. Whether it is Singhalese or Tamils whether it is government soldier or the LTTE rebel, they are all Sri Lankans. Fair enough! Question is, what brought about this situation? Isn’t it the policy of the government? Isn’t it the manner the government is going about trying to resolve the issue. Has the government really addressed the issue?
Just look at the situation. Basically, the conflict is along ethnic lines – while one race enjoys all the privileges the other is discriminated. The Singhalese governments have all along been depriving the Tamil community their due rights and treat them unequally. For forty years since independence, the Tamils have been staging a non violent struggle for their rights but the Singhalese governments never considered their aspirations nor treated them on an equal footing. It is only after seeing that the 40 years of futile attempt of non-violent struggle, the Tamil youths took to arms which gave birth of LTTE.
Now with more than 70,000 lives lost and a million people displaced, many of them have lost their loved ones, many lost all their belongings, their dwelling places, livelihood destroyed, many have witnessed their women folk raped, most of them Tamils, I am not sure whether winning the hearts and minds of the affected people will be an easy task. Nevertheless, one should not lose heart but give it a try and try to resolve the conflict in a peaceful manner. Dialogue as a healthy paradigm to achieve peace is fine. For this to happen, the government must be sincere. It is the policies and actions of the successive governments (the present government made it worse) which gave birth to the rebellious attitude and therefore the government should be sincere and put forward a just devolution package (under the circumstances, I believe devolution of powers is the only way out) to satisfy the aspirations of the Tamils. Solution is put a UN monitoring mission in place. Given the fact there is no trust between the government and the Tamils, a third party intervention is necessary. The US, the EU, Japan, Norway and India had already been in the negotiating team as Co-chairs and players and are ever willing and ready to assist to bring both parties to the negotiating table – revive the CFA and set the stage for negotiation for a credible devolution of power to meet the aspirations of the affected party.

A fine article pin pointing the blunders of the politicians who are the root cause for the present problem. Added to this, is the corrupted officers who are arrested recently and the failure of the security forces to arrest the criminals who were well protected by the politicians. Some of us escaped from being abducted while some were abducted unexpectedly and murdered by these underworld criminals. I had this nasty experience. The main reason for the curse of Sri Lanka is that we have not realized the value of independence because we did got independence through a bloody war like USA and India.

  • 7. Anura Gamage  |  October 29th, 2007 at 11:57 pm

Well written. Something that you have missed is that every sinhalese leader who come to power has a clandestine affair with the LTTE. Lot of Tamils and Sinhalese do not know this. This is the type of politics we have in our country. MR talks about fighting the LTTE and then he secretly allows the LTTE to infiltrate the airport and destroy the planes. Its so sad to see how the common mass swallow all what the south leaders and LTTE says. Until and unless we sri lankans understand this.. there will never be peace.

  • 8. Patriot  |  October 30th, 2007 at 12:34 am

The peace can be achieved only understanding of each people their culture religion and common human values.
Who ever boast to maintain peace and order using weapons or suppressing could never acxhieve enen they are super powers.
The real peace can be achieved with real politicians who are educated decent and GOD fearing.
Even the country is devided I hope they can achieve peace.
For achieving peace and prosperity we are lack of good leaders. There were good leaders but unfortunately they can not rule the country due to they are minorities in our country politics unlike India.

Well it’s really great to know that Sinhalese regret their mistakes and they admit the genocide and atrocities of Sinhala military against the Tamils who have been ruling part of SriLanka before the British arrived, and the one-sided-sinhala-only constitution.

But the solution to this ethnic conflict is “Two State Solution” as there has been since millenniums (before Christ).

Sinhala people will be better of by going with the Tamil Kings and Sinhala kings’ period that is declaring the “Tamil Ealam” which would consist North and East SriLanka

No one understands the way you do. Its a very few people like us who think this way which is not going to change anything. Most of the srilankan people have proved themselves to be fools time and again by electing these types of so called leaders. Dont blame the leaders of srianka for todays problems.. blame the people. They are ones who brought them to power. Our moronic srilankans should go to the west and see how intelligent people are when electing a leader. Srilankans only know how to booze, vent and get a thrill about talking politics and cricket. On the election day they are nothing but idiots. Look at India…. being so diverse yet the people are so smart in chosing their leader. Let us learn from our neighbour.

  • 12. P. Kaya  |  October 30th, 2007 at 1:12 am

I dont agree with arul’s comment that learned people are destroying minority. Srilanka is suffering because of uneducated people. They eat anything what the politicians vomit. See the developed world where its not easy to con the general masses. coz they are very well informed. It is because of their education. So therefore lets educate our children.. atleast give them some college education so that they dont behave like the srilankans in srilanka.

  • 13. Pius Thasan  |  October 30th, 2007 at 1:20 am

We can’t stress this point enough. All of us – Sri Lankans have to realize that we belong to the same land and need to work together to build this country to be great. It is unimaginable what people have gone through due to the ethnic conflict and revenge might seem the only way to go. It is easy to simile when someone smiles at you and frown when frowned upon yet we need to be above average and try to reconcile at least for the next generations to come.

Regardless of which divide of SRI LANKA we happen to live, first and foremost we should stop the war and make sure that it never happens again. Regardless of the sort of history we like to believe or try to justify the chauvinistic stance that we take we must remember the lessons of history that WAR IS NOT THE SOLUTION!

Remember that diversity is a good thing. We don’t have to like everyone but we must respect everyone. Let us not take shots at each other in forums and media but utilize the technology to help achieve peace.

    Better late than never.
The whole country should change their attitude to this national crisis. Politicians should be made to deliver the aspirations of the entire popoulation. They must serve the people and not themselves ?

Why not follow Lew Kwan Yew’s advise ( the former PM of Singapore ) to follow the example of Singapore and Malaysia to enable Elam and Sri Lanka to become Paradise regained in the Indian Ocean?

The two nations can Co exist and complement each other .

This is in no way a topical essence in concluding that prehistoric ammendments in the mentality of certain races can be scritinized to the very end. It all gives the reader an inexpicable variety juxtaposed with tantalizing truth which can lead you to the realm of doom. By far a phenomen that encompases the assimilation of the entire being into what one calls a “vaulting ambition” in the minds of certain communities where war seems to be the unreverted enigma in the wayfare of truth.. Hats off to the writer.

  • 17. Niranjan  |  October 30th, 2007 at 2:14 am

Excellent article. It illustrates the basic facts of ethnic issue. Most articles stands either for military or LTTE.
This writer stands in neutral and illustrates the real facts. He has to produce more articles to show the clear picture of our problems.

  • 19. For the Peace  |  October 30th, 2007 at 6:04 am

I totally agree with the editor and wish everyone in SL and abroad will start to think in a broad minded way. This is the only way we can come to a peaceful situation.

  • 20. Sadhatissa  |  October 30th, 2007 at 7:08 am

Sad this article tries once again to blame the Singhalese for all the woes of the country. Murdering soldiers, driving Muslkims and Singhalese from the North were done by Tamils who don’t think patriotically bout the furture of the country.

Whilst the army were in the early years poorly trained and led that is not the case now.

If fellow feeling were so great amoung the Tamils let them lay down their arms and start talking.

The problem is in fact the LTTE have no intention of negotiating and those like the writer of this article know this to be the case.

Onjly the military defeat of the LTTE will see a negotiated settlement.

So lets stop this nonse of blaming Sri Lankans and the Singhalese and start fighting for a society where people do not have to live in fear of a Nazi racist terrorist movement.

  • 21. Bandara  |  October 30th, 2007 at 8:06 am

Well said sir. Unfortunate of Sri Lankans they are not understanding or realysing this truth. Crazy politicians and LTTE Leaders made people to think and hapy by hering the damage hapend to other party.

End of the day getting destroye Countri;s lives and properties, which can be used for beterment of all sri lankans.

War will bring only distar and tear. Dialogue will bring peace.

Sinhalease must rise up against their thugs type politicians and monks. Hope Ranjit emerson continue his work in your website.

I really surprised to see these kind of article. I big respect to the writer started this topic and all those comments are true too. I am a tamil live in London last 15 years but my dream is when I can go back to my country and live peacefully. I am not the only one dreaming about to go back to srilanka, there many like me waiting for the happiest day in our life.

The main problem in our country’s freedom of speech?

do we have that in our country now? we should thank to internet to see this article and comments, if we publish this in a srilankan newspaper we can not see the writer anymore the government will kill him, so how we make the innocent poor people understand the politicians many making business? this is not easy task??

dont we have a life in srilanka?? god bless us!!!

Good people have started thinking and writting atleast after what LTTE did at Anurathapura. I think its too late to take about lankens. There are two countries in lanka, this should be understood. Its too late to talk, we tamils have given a very big priz to hold our culture and the languge. Lets talk about the border between tow countries. Tamil Eelam is the only wayout for tamils.

  • 25. Jack Ranasinghe  |  October 30th, 2007 at 4:29 pm

Lets get real people. Most of us who visit this site, think alike. Reading and enjoying the mono-theme articles in sites like this one are essentially acts of self-gratification. Lets not kid ourselves that our politicians, or those that make them, are going to read or be converted by writers like Emerson. Sri Lanka’s window of opportunity has closed. We had two years to move forward and we chose to run backwards. The country is doomed with no hope of recovery – unlike Bangladesh, Sierra Leone or Argentina. Let those who can get out do so – the rest, may their faith see them through.

  • 26. Stanislaus  |  October 30th, 2007 at 6:43 pm

Amen to the comments by Ranjit Emerson.
The occupation of the lands of Tamil speaking people by the Sinhala speaking government forces; assault of a tamil worshiper in Manik Ganga during Kathirkamam festival and now at the bail hearing of Arthur Wamanam this is what Daily Mirror reported on its 27th Ocober 2007 issue”The CID said the suspect was a Tamil and objected to granting bail saying there would be a public outcry if the suspect was granted bail.”

There cannot be a superficial solution to the problem of Sri Lanka. There must occur a fundamental change.

    Sadhatissa

Don’t you ever learn from the past. You cannot win LTTE without killing all Tamils. If LTTE dreaming about Eelam then you are dreaming about winning LTTE. Stop talking nonsense and think in a different way to approach this problem

  • 28. Ayaduray  |  October 30th, 2007 at 7:25 pm

Everybody is well aware of the underlying reasons for the conflict. All the parties should now focus on the solutions to the conflict – 1. whether they want to continue with the current set up – I don’t think the Tamils will accept this; 2. whether they will opt for a two governments under a unitary centre like China and Hong Kong – this is possible with the resources distributed equitably among all the communities proportional to their sizes; 3. whether they prefer to go for an independent state like East Timor getting out of Indonesia – this is what the majority of the Tamils want. 4. a political package that give a credible devolution of power that satisfies the people in the North and East.

The Tamils have made known of their wants very clearly and this was being discussed and going on smoothly with the CFA in force until the promises and pledges were violated during the last peace talks. Now the ball is in the government’s court but the government is divided and is unable to come to a decision. The All Party Representative Committee (APRC) appointed by the President to find a credible package of devolution of power to the Tamils in the North and East is yet to arrive at a political package for the resolution of the ethnic conflict. The main Opposition UNP had withdrawn its support. The government is unable to reach an agreement with its coalition partners — the JHU, MEP, CP and the LSSP. The TNA, the single largest Tamil party, said it could never depend on the APRC working out a political package saying they do not have any faith in the APRC. It is a total failure.

The government’s actions or its behaviour is such there is no trust between the government and the Tamils and as such winning the hearts and minds of the affected people at this point of time would not be that easy. There is no way the Tamils are going to accept a forced military solution. The war and violence must cease to allow both parties must enter into a negotiation stage – a stage of reconciliation. For this to happen, CFA must come into force, for which a third party intervention is necessary – involving the US, the EU, Japan, Norway and India taking the role of Co-chairs and players possibly under the UN umbrella. And finally looking at the scenario and taking into accounts what has happened, a credible devolution package giving the power to the communities in the North and East to decide their destiny appear to be the solution which can settle the issue.

Wake up boys, you been sleeping for almost 50 years.

Suddenly, we woke up to have a dialogue with cereal and orange drink.
People were talking and got killed in the past 50 years by the state.

Come guys, come and talk to us, we will not kill you this time. We will give you at least what you have asked 50 years ago. Sorry for the delay, we could not hear you all these years.

Promise , we will talk to you for another year until we buy some more sophisticated planes. India will propose a plan to send tamils to heaven.

    Sorry, sorry.

When you read reports, studies on SriLanka’s post independence history, it will be very clear where the failure has been. Everyone agress that Tamils have been discriminated against…in their own land. Their own land called SriLanka. The Sinhala politicans have all the time used the racist card for their own purposes. They have let out a monster which now they cannot control.

The Government never cared for the minorities. They could do it because the ignorant Sinhala masses gave support for thier actions. They were told..and believed that SriLanka belonged to them..ONLY. Other’s (minorities) did not matter. The Buddhist Clergy had a major role in this.

Now after all the non voilent protests for more then 40 years (which the Government replied with brutual force/ voilence), the nature consequence happens. When all peaceful means fails, voilence becomes the next course of action. You must understand this was reactionary. Thus the LTTE was born.

Now who gave birth to the LTTE ? The LTTE is a natural result of the successive actions / inactions of the Sinhala politicans.

Did the politicans even then try to work out a just solution ? The answer is a NO. Then some buildings are attacked in the USA i.e 9 / 11 incident – and suddenly everybody becomes a Terrorist. All opperrest minorities all over the world fighting of their equal rights are now classified as Terrorists.
Remember `either you are with us or against us’ – as announced by Bush / Cheney team. We all know the amount of lies that were involved.

And in SriLanka the Sinhala politicans rode along these Terrorist lines. Not only did they take advantage of this new scenario, they themselves became Terrorists ( STATE).

Now how do you deal with the freedom fighters in SriLanka…bomb the civilian villages…from the Air……ask the local population to gather in a Church…as a safe heaven and then you send aircraft to bomb the Church…The Orphanage in Trincomallee….the incidents are all too numerous.
The Sinhala politicans will not hesitate to bomb their own citizens from the air. WHY ??
Because those `citizens’ do not MATTER .

Agreements…how many have been signed and not honoured. The most recent signed by Ranil of UNP in 2002. Before the ink has dried….the Government had already broken the provisions. Was there any good faith ? Did Ranil and the UNP even take any effort to sell `the Federal Idea’ ? . NO !!
Because he and his team were not sincere. Not sincere in solving the problem politically. He was more interested in his `International Safety Net’. They even took credit later for the defection fo Karuna. What does all this tell the LTTE ??

I just read that the UNP wants to work out a new Agreeement if it came to Power. THIS IS A JOKE. After talking about Federalism..which they agreed to explore…now they have gone back on their word.

IS THIS A SURPRISE ?? NO. All the Sinhala Politicans have been the same. People without a Strong Backbone. No Honour. But don’t forget..they can go on thinking like this..because the masses are so guilable. And of course let us not forget the Clergy. They practise everthing else except the teachings of the Great Buddha.

Now there is no trust on either side. Now after all these 50 years….getting the people to think as SriLankans…as one nation..??? Frankly I think that time is gone. I have meet Srilankans…and I can tell you it is now a divided country. Tamils will not just give up and accept whatever is given.

SriLanka does not have credible, intelligent politicans..there never has been. Just blame the LTTE for everything. Has they offered a just solution earlier …sincerely…they would have check-mated the LTTE. But like I said that cream breed of politicans does NOT exist in SriLanka.

Federal or Confederal Structure will be the best answer. When the Tamils have their own say in the running of their own affairs…and after some time….maybe a long time..when the wounds heal…..then perhaps.
But now…to get every SriLankan to SINCERELY think that they are one People..people of the same land. It is a good move.BUt can you get everyone to sincerely feel like that. A Paradim Shift. !!

I am very pessimistic about it. I think it is too late !!

  • 31. Naga UK  |  November 1st, 2007 at 11:22 am

At last some people are beginning to think in positive direction. Nevertheless, there is no light at the end of the long tunnel. Still, be it VP, MR, RW or even WW (JVP), TNA (sorry for their plight) and the fractions thereof continue to stick to agendas that are not very healthy for the country. There cannot be any peaceful solution that can emanate from the grassroot for the grassroot has rotten to such an extent it has no prospect of having a voice, let alone bringing pressure on their leaders. One has to resign himself to the prospect of total destruction and birth of new concepts of nationalism. It is very doubtful. We have a history of ‘cut throtism’ that surpasses any other country. One begins to wonder whether it is in the genes of Sri Lankans. Our leader in the 21st century are wired to the Anuradhapura era knowing very well they are grossly misleading the innocent.

  • 32. Dingiri  |  November 2nd, 2007 at 10:39 am

The writer means well but the crucial flaw in the article is that he doesnt have an opinion on what the final settlement should be. Forum, can you please stop saying things like “Should go for a negotiated Settlement” or to “pursue a Political Solution” or “Federal Solution”. We are getting a bit tired of hearing these hakneyed phrases. What we would like to hear is.

Can we have the Sinhalese and Tamil views on
    1. How much devolution should there be?
    2. How much co-operation should there be between the two entities?
    3. What are your proposed borders?
    4. Is the disarmament of the LTTE a prerequisite to your proposed solution?
    5. Why do you think your proposed solution is fair by all communities?

Please respond and DBS could hopefully send the answers to his contacts in the Govt , LTTE and IC. Its high time someone did a serious survey to find out what Sri Lankans really think about these issues.

  • 33. Wijey Ruben  |  November 2nd, 2007 at 11:53 am

Excellent article, any civilised and intelleligent person will understand the facts stated in this. Srilankans need to realise this, importatly singalese population and put pressure on singalese politions to come up with a political solution which gives equal rights to tamils. Then tamils have a alternative solution (rather than LTTE)

  • 34. Tisa  |  November 3rd, 2007 at 4:30 am

No point blaming politicians. And there should not be a WAR which kills innocent civilians because of some politician’s mistakes. No other country should interfere in our local politics either in this regard. Will they like us interfering as a nation in their politics? Specially, if there is a situation like this in their country? I do not think so.

If anybody wants to stop the war, that is LTTE who should do that. They should stop fighting and make their people look around the world for them to see what’s happening.

IF THE LTTE STOPS FIGHTING WILL THE ARMY HAVE ANYBODY TO FIGHT BACK WITH ?

What are they really fighting for, killing for, and make the army fight against them? Do the people who fight really know?

How many of them communicate with Sri Lankans in other areas of Sri Lanka? How many knows about how people live outside their area? How Sinhalese, Muslims or Burgher’s treat them if they come out of their bloody war?

I do not think they know anything beyond their own war territory. The fighters are brain washed. The communication gap is massive. They are born & bred in the war & brain washed by their leaders who thinks fighting will solve the problem.

    I DO NOT THINK SO

Actually is there a problem for them to live in Sri Lanka without having a gun in their hands?

As far as I can see they can live anywhere in Sri Lanka without fear. Only Sinhalese, Muslims & Burgher’s who do not have any intention to fight with do have a problem since they can only live outside LTTE territory.

It is terrible to think how they have been brain washed against Sinhalese.

Its a shame that nobody can see this. Specially the leader of the LTTE, Mr Prabakaran. I think he is being very well used by few Tamil power hungry Politicians, for his great dictatorship ability among his own kind. Being the leader he will fight till his death.

I say this because it was something I saw during peace talk process.

Ultimately who is going to win? And what’s going to be won?

That’s the main question anybody should look into.
