It is sad to note that religions and deities are being used as tools for military and political manipulations. the inevitable result would be that eventually people would lose their religious values which is already happening among Budhdhists - thanks to the political monks and politicians thriving on religious slogans. A paradoxically interesting news was that JHU getting into the act of defending the "Madhu Status" whereas they have been voicing "anti-Christian" sentiments for a long time,if my memory serves right and in reality they should have been celebrating the event by their norms. So, anything is possible in this country!

"Dalit" is the word used to denote low caste in North India. Possibly it is a hindi word, which is being used in South India recently. I wonder whether it is catching on among the Sri Lankan Tamils too!! I think they should either use an equivalent English or Tamil word. Tamil is a rich language and should not depend on Hindi!!

“Incidently Thevaayanpitty is populated by a down-trodden Dalit community known as “paraiyar”.”

Dalits are common in India but I never knew they are in Sri Lanka.

It's so interesting to read some of the comments, definitely you could straight away pick up an ethnic divide but many other divisions are also coming to the fore..catholics vs born agains, sinhalese against muslims and there is also a touch of Atheism. One particular commentator seems to be shedding croc.tears,he wants the brutal sinhalese army to save the hapless tamils from the clutches of the LITTE terrorists as he sees them,I wonder where he was in 1983 when innocent Tamils were butchered in the streets of Colombo with the active participation of the saviors he is talking of,To top it all MR is capable of planting a replica and forcing the clergy to sanctify it,he is even capable of rewrting history by giving sacred Madu precincts a colonial tinge and declaring it an area hallowed by lord Buddah himself fifteen hundred years before the colonial rulers set foot on the Island.
Madu Matha belongs to all who worship her but no body can deny the rich tamil christian heritage associated with her holy presence in the land traditionally inhabited by Tamil speaking people.

Personally, I think the Army should just flatten the church and move on, but it will be a propaganda loss, so they can't do it. So instead they should just make a replica of the statue, claim that they've recaptured it from the LTTE statue-nappers and everyone will be happy. The Kandyans did the same thing with the Tooth Relic of the Buddha. The Portugese took it to Goa and burned it, but the Buddhist priests later claimed that that was a replica and that the real one was safe. No one knows for sure. It can be done again.

DBS,

You seem to work faster than most journalists in Sri lanka. you always do your own investigative work. That's what true journalists do.

As a strong catholic and a sinhalese, I see this destrying of the madu church bt the GOSL a action similar to taliban destrying the buddist statues in afganistan.. they cannot be rebuilt..How would we sinhalese feel if the tamils destroyed the tooth relic in dalada temple in Kandy where I am from?
