Dominic's #1 view is unfortunate and based on a weak foundation of anti-Indianism, prejudice and a woeful lack of history - both present, immediate past and ancient. All Sinhalese do not look at Indians with jaundiced eyes - perhaps as Dominic does. It seems to me, after more Lankans (particularly from the rural areas on Budda Gaya pilgrimages) travelling to India consequent to a higher standard of income here and easier air travel - Lankans have greater respect and
appreciation of her giant neighbour. They realise being friendly with India is in our interest. It is natural for both China and India to take all those necessary steps in and around their borders in the protection of their vast countries and large populations. This is natural. At the sametime, both India and China - as responsible 21st century powers - are also talking to each other regularly to reduce existing tensions and misunderstandings between them. Of course, for the sake of their own existence the JHU, JVP, PNM and others must continously live on a diet of anti-Indianism. They have no other platform to appeal to the Sinhala voters to. Of course, everything is not right with India and certainly her policy towards Sri Lanka now and then. India is not perfect and the first to say this are Indians themselves.

Sri Lanka ( Sinhala lanka) will never trust India and it has always used India to achieve it's ethnic cleansing agenda against Eela Tamils. They may smile at Indians but there is a deep hatred towards them as if they are one day going to swallow them. The historical events have good examples.

By giving Hambanthoda harbor deliberately to China is a way of preventing Indian influence in the Island since India has to face China too if it interfered. Sinhala conniving politicians are good at exploiting world powers for their benefits. Now the Hambantoda belongs to China hence the southern hemisphere of the Indian ocean which is very vital for the ship movement.

China's military planners are way ahead of Indian ones who are not capable of understanding their real needs,
instead fall for the exploitation of the Chinese plans.

China has very well fortified India's northern part.
Srarting from Myanmar, Maosists now ruling in Nepal,
China's close military friendship with Pakistan, Built a highway which goes through Indian Himayala area from China to Pakistan, Rebuilding the Chittagong harbor in Bangaladesh.

In the south part, China now has Ports at Hambanthota and Maldieves.

What a perfect check mate by China to control India.

What is wrong with the Indian policy makers?
Are they capable of understanding the Geo political needs and act upon it or continuously fail to safe guard their nation's shipping lines and other strategic areas, I think Indian policy makers are not capable of their jobs, too much corruption, internal conflicts with states and not having a unanimous clear policy will push back India many years and will even deprive it's growth significantly in the long run and where as China will be dictating what India supposed to do.

Interesting article. Goes to show how China and India want to grab the Resources of their neighbours.
Between the two, I will Bet on China. Disciplined China will come on top, unlike the Undisciplined Indians!. As the Chinese saying goes:"there cannot be two Tigers on a Hill", in this case the Hill is Asia. In 1962, China coud've kept the whole NE India if they really wanted to, but they did not, it was all about teaching India a good lesson in Diplomacy and Strength, with a weak Nehru.
Take India, most of the NE want out, as India is gobbling their Resources. Even the cousins of Hindi people, the Assamese want the Hindi people out as do the Nagas, and the list goes on. Why is because India simply does not Respect the NE people. Same deal with the Punjabis and Kashmiris and Tamils. India does not care for protecting the lives of Tamil fishermen, her own Citizens! In the 21st Century, the world had grown smaller. People have needs, education, jobs, identity, self-respect and being part of something, if they don't find it they look to better countries. Now India, the uninvited guests they are, wants to grab Trinco of Sri Lanka along with all the Gas/Oil Resources of Gulf of Mannar, without having the Basic Respect of asking the Tamils of NE Sri Lanka! New Delhi simply does not have the Basic Self-Respect! The way things are going with all the Corruption and Casteism and filth and total crap in India, I will be surprised to see the Indian Union holding on as it is today, even Ten Years down the road! Wait and see!

Apart from India and China Uncle Sam too finding it hard to cope the situation. He has been caste out from the Philippines and the other East Asia region. Wherever he has been one generation as been altered. He is looking for a beach landing in this Island he would love to soak himself under the sun in Trinco.
There goes the destiny of the Tamil aspiration. Who cares about them, just give me a foothold.

First and formost an ordinary Sinhala Buddhist sees India as their number one enemy other than the L.T.T.E.
It is interesting also some Sinhala Buddhist fundamentalists consider Thamilnadu as a seperate country from rest of India. This is no fiction.
Many Sinhalase refuse to believe that the Jaffna Thamil customs, traditions etc greatly differ from Thamilnadu.
There is absolutely no interruction between Thamilnadu and Jaffna other than trade(smuggling of fuel Medicine etc for the L.T.T.E.).They never see eye to eye.
The Development of the Hambantota harbour was in the news for the past so many years.Often the project ran into controversy due to interfierance with regard to the tender proceedures etc.
The present president is a son of the south, and Hambantota is his home turf.In addittion there are other factors that have contributed to the development of the Hambantota harbour.
The Southern Sinhalese form the bulk of the Sinhala inteligencia and are very enterprising, the paralel to the Jaffna Thamils.
But from ancient times there is rivalry between the Upcountry Sinhalese and the Southern Sinhalese.
Other than the present President, all the previous leaders of Srilanka be it the Primeminister or the President were not from the South.
Naturally there was always complaints that the South was neglated.
In addittion the Hambontota district is ecologically not friendly,a parched landscape like the Ramanathapuram district in Thamilnadu.
So the development of the Hambantota harbour will dawn a new era in the lifes of the people of Hambantota and the district of Matara as well.
Security considerations also play an important part.
After the Harbour is established it proposed to establish a Pertrolium refinary.Which is considered more secure from L.T.T.E.attacks.
Once the Colombo Matara Express Highway is completed the reliance on Colomb will be eased to some extent.
The establishment of the Hambantota Harbour is seen by different people from different angles. The Economists see it in a particular angle. The Sinhala Buddhists see it in a different way. They expect the southern Province to be fully established so that Colombo will be less prominance to a lesser amount and the monopoly held by the minority community at present will be diluted!
As mentioned earlier the Sinhalese especially the Buddhist clergy consider India as their arch rivals.
So even if India had volunteered to build the Hambantota Harbour with friendly terms there would have been fierce opposition.
But I do not think that the Sinhalese will allow the Hambantota Harbour for any activities that are against Indian interests.
The Sinhalese in general are a very friendly and easy going people. What they geniunely fear is India is trying to destabilise their country by helping the L.T.T.E.
I think the Indian think tanks will have to give serious considerations to this.
Very little is known about Srilanka in India.Even in Thamilnadu the situation is same.In Towns such as Trichy ,Naamakkal,Madurai,Chennai where Thamils with Srilankan connection live,Srilanka is known. Not in rest of Thamilnadu or rest of India.
So it is high time India stop 'Daadagiriying" Srilanka and see ways of improving relations with the Sinhala Buddhists.
Srilanka has a very much better relationship with China from ancient times. The Bandaranayake International conference Hall is a telling evidence of that relationship and much more.
Does India has anything to showoff the 'friendly relation ship' with Srilanka other than the bitter experiance with the Sinhalese by sending the I.P.K.F.!
