14 killed and 43 injured in explosion near Godapitiya jumma mosque

The spirit of celebration and religious fervour was shattered when an explosion near the Jumma Mosque in Godapitiya, Akuressa yesterday killed 14 and injured 43. The attack at around 10 am was aimed at the high powered politicians attending a procession celebrating Milad-Un-Nabi, the birth of Prophet Mohommed at the mosque.

Post and Telecommunications Minister Mahinda Wijesekara who suffered severe injuries was airlifted to Colombo General Hospital while Petroleum Minister A.H.M. Fowzie, Home Affairs Minister Chandrasiri Gajadheera, Cultural Affairs Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Disaster Relief Services Minister Ameer Ali, Deputy Religious Affairs Minister Pandu Bandaranayake were among the targeted.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa visited the injured at the Colombo National Hospital in the evening on Mar 10th.

Southern Province Chief Minister H.G. Sirisena suffered minor injuries. The Ministers were among the procession walking towards the venue when the blast occurred. The function was organised by Minister Gajadheera and was attended by many religious leaders.

Military Spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said that according to eyewitnesses the suspected LTTE suicide bomber approached the area on a push bicycle, got off amongst the crowd of devotees, before blowing up. Among the dead are several local government politicians from Matara including Linton Abeydeera, Upali Sarathchandra and Thilan Wijesekara. The autopsies on the bodies at the Matara Hospital will be conducted today. Four police teams are conducting investigations with the assistance of the army.

A special nine member medical team was airlifted to Matara, aboard a special Sri Lanka Air Force 30- seater MI 17 helicopter under the orders of the President and comprised of Consultant Neuro Surgeon Dr Sunil Perera, Consultant Neuro Anesthetists Dr Roshini Ranwala and seven other doctors to assist them, according to Colombo National Hospital Director Dr. Hector Weerasinghe.

The team upon arrival in Matara determined that it is better to bring the more seriously injured victims including Minister Wijesekara back to Colombo. “The Minister had sustained a very serious injury and was taken into the operating theatre immediately, while the other two injured individuals are also being treated by our doctors.” Minister Wijesekara was kept under observation in the ICU after surgery.

Among the injured 35 were taken to the Matara General Hospital while three were taken to the Akuressa Hospital, according to Police Spokesman, SSP Ranjith Gunasekara. Two cirtically injured still remain at the hospital. He said that more security personnel have been deployed to the area while a search for LTTE cadres in the Akuressa area continues.

Meanwhile, Resettlement Affairs Minister Rishard Badurdeensaid that the Matara Divisional Secretary has been empowered to provide funds from the Secretariat to assist the wounded and the Ministry would provide more funds today. However, the Minister informed that a compensation payment has not been determined to the injured and the families of those who died yet.

Among the Ministers targetted at the attack in Akuressa yesterday, was Petroleum Minister A.H.M. Fowzie. The latter recounted his harrowing experience with the fervent wish that the terror threat will be extinguished from the country soon.

“Last morning we were in Akuressa to attend the National Programme celebrating Milad-un- Nabi organised by the Home Affairs Minister, Chandrasiri Gajadheera. The event was to celebrate our holy Prophet Mohommed’s birthday. It was so well organised that it was attended by all religious leaders irrespective of caste, colour or creed. We had just received the blessings of the religious leaders, and we were walking towards the venue when suddenly a blast took place a few yards behind us, seriously injuring one minister, Mahinda Wijesekara.”

However Minister Fowzie along with Ministers Ameer Ali, Chandrasiri Gajadheera, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana and Pandu Bandaranaike escaped unscathed. “God saved us,” Fowzie said, “We didn’t have a scratch, but our bodies were covered with blood and flesh of the dead.”

“We condemn this act. As Muslims we have had many experiences of terrorists killing our people. There have been incidents where they have killed Muslims while they are in prayer. This was an important day for us as we were celebrating the birth of our holy Prophet Mohommed.

I offer my condolences to the families of the dead and I appeal to the Muslim Community to support the President, and help him wipe out the terror threat in Sri Lanka, because if these acts continue like this we will be wiped out."

I have 2 questions:
1. If this is an LTTE work, how could they come to southern most part and specially knew of theose ministers comming?

2. If not LTTE, why governmnet targetted the powerful Muslim leaders, to created violance or similar ethnic clencing in South.

News says:
"A special nine member medical team was airlifted to Matara, aboard a special Sri Lanka Air Force 30- seater MI 17 helicopter under the orders of the President.."

But for the people injured in north, gov cannot spend money. They will invite India and NGOs for help. A real facist gov.

.
It doesn't matter,.... in Srilanka, there are more Ministers than MP's, it's like 0 > 1.

What an idiotic comment. Who the hell targeted Muslim leaders when the only muslim leader was surrounded by several powerful sinhaleese ministers. Why these kind of comments even get published.

The LTTE's finest work... The sooner we eradicate these TERRORISTS from our country the better..

It is obviously another attempt by LTTE targeting the Government Ministers who were present at the Islamic religious function and this suicide attack was not targeted particularly at a Muslim gathering. Having said that, knowing very well that this is an Islamic religious function and scores of civilians have gathered there, LTTE has directed such attack in which many Muslims devotees are killed and injured; for which LTTE is solely responsible.
By executing such a heinous act of terrorism in a religious civilian gathering, LTTE has again demonstrated its political immaturity at this crucial time when the plea to force a ceasefire with GOSL by desperate Tamil civilians in Vanni and International Tamil Diaspora, is gathering momentum with the International community. When an act of terror like this is committed by an organization, any reasonable foreign Government will support GOSL effort for the complete annihilation of such terrorist group however noble its separatist agenda is. It further reinforces GOSL argument that the current military operation in Vanni is a war against terrorism.
As we deeply grieve for the loss of innocent lives in Vanni as well as at Meelad-un-Nabi function at Matara I feel sorry for the Sri Lankan Tamils as their relentless agitation in foreign countries for a ceasefire with GOSL to save the lives of Tamil civilians and LTTE leadership in Vanni, would be in vain as long as LTTE continues to display its scant respect for innocent lives. It is not surprising to any rational mind that the foreign Governments are reluctant to request GOSL to halt the military push in Vanni for apprehending the LTTE leadership who are responsible for countless terrorist attacks like this.

The scapegoat is always there to bear the brunt whether it happens at Lahore or Matara for the state to escape irrespective of security lapses

Mr. Fernando,

Civilians killings have to be condemned whether it is by aerial bombardment, artillery shelling, or suicide bombings. Selective indignation by racists like you won't impress me.

You kill thousands of innocent civilans in the name of "eradicating" terrorism, then complain when it comes back to haunt you. And you are among those who talk about a "little street justice" to journalists. In other words, you are a racist thug and your views deserve to be dismissed with contempt.

Atleast after seeing what is happening at Iraq, Afghanistan and now at Pakistan, Srilankan government should have realized that 'Bush style' solution doesn't work. By their mindless killing of civilians, Rajapakse's are going to make Srilnaka into another Iraq.

It is high time, right minded people bring some sense to Srilankan rulers. This incident is another strong message what the future is in store for Srilanka. Your brutality will only instigate more similar reactions.

If anyone is under the impression that the so called war against LTTE is going to be over in a few days or weeks, this is a grim reminder that it is not so. May be the future is going to be more bloodier and chaotic than the present.

If such an attack can take place deep inside south, with precise intelligence about the gathering and coordination & instructions from the 'top', one can imagine what will happen in the north and east in the coming months.

Serious attempts for a 'just solution' is the immediate need of the hour before it is too late. Let the rulers stop day dreaming that they have wiped out the LTTE and now can continue to keep patting their own back as 'they have shown the world how to eradicate terrorism'.

Security was lax. Sri Lankans are now waiting expectently for the war to end and things to be normal again. As the LTTE is targetting politicians innocent civilians too are affected. It is better to avoid such functions and gatherings unless security is ensured.

You people (Mali, aratai) are less than animals. People have been killed by the LTTE terrorists while celebrating a religious day. And you can do is find faults with how they were given medical treatments. Not the bastards who did it. that's why we are having this war. an idiot like you-Prabhakaran started this war. It's innocent tamils in north and sinhalese and muslims in south who suffer because of that not people like you who enjoy the luxuries of the west.

These ministers who are conducting genocidal war against innocent tamil civilians are crying foul when they tasted their own medicine (terror). These terrorist ministers and their facist government murdered more than 130 civilians on the same day (10th of March 2009). Many infants were among the dead. The mass murders are blessed by criminals called international community who also oversaw the same in Gaza.

When tamil civilians are butchered, it is called democracy. When the butchers are attacked it is called "terror". As long as the hypocracy and injustice continue, members of the facist Sri lankan government will not be safe!

Well Expatriate, I wasn't trying to 'Impress' you...

Please don't give me your sanctimonious lectures about civilian casualties. If you were truly concerned about that you would have condemned the LTTE from the beginning of 2002 for planning to put us back in the state we are in today.

Why should politicians attend a muslim ( or any other ) religious function, knowing that Jeyaraj Fernandopulle was killed similarly at a sports event?
Religion should be left out of politics. But our politicians will do anything to grab cheap publicity, and have unfortunately learned a bitter lesson.
Lee Kwan Yew long ago warned our leaders not to mix religion with politics, but this advice was not heeded.
See how sigapore has progressed with four official languages, meritocracy in public service appointments, free and fair elections, minimal corruption & waste of resources and complete rule of law.

In the continuing saga of senseless violence in this blood splattered island once again over a dozen Lankans perish violently and many more badly injured – some maimed and crippled for life. Many families have lost their bread-winners and will be consigned to penury. Like in the Anuradhpura incident that took the lives of Janaka Perera, Dr Johnpulle and many others minutes after the Matara incident men like Minister Rambukwella and PM Wickramanayake, characteristically, claim "it is entirely the work of the LTTE".
Fortunately, Sinhala people capable of rational thinking no longer take these men of hollow thinking seriously anymore. It is unfortunate, though not totally unexpected in today's context, a section of the Press ran editorials that can only inflame Muslim-Tamil feelings – not to mention stoking Sinhala
hatred. The fact is an attempt such as this requires days of reconnaissance, a team of men/women,
safe on-the-spot place/s to meet and plan as well as people to dress/arm the alleged suicide bomber. If it is the LTTE, the entire supporting caste have to be Tamils. Consider these days even Tamils living
in Colombo for generations are now suspect and checked/re-checked by the Police of the area and the security forces. Tamils from the North East- and even those from the
Plantation areas – not being permanent residence in Colombo - find it impossible to
visit or stay in the South. Tamils are hardly seen in the surrounding areas of Colombo. Only a few Tamils venture out to Sinhala areas like Matara except for the occasional visit to Kataragama – and that too in the company of many other Tamils in vans, buses and other motor-vehicles. Therefore, how on earth can Tamils be in the-Sinhala-dominated area of Matara to carry out this despicable deed? There is no chance the Muslims of the area will cooperate with the LTTE to kill many VIPs, including their own, in front of their own mosque. It is well known several leading politicians of the Govt, former VIPs and others are
are vying desperately in a power struggle for political recognition in Matara. One VVIP has even fled overseas for his life. He is well liked by the people of Matara and has many influential followers in the area for the massive development he carried out in the last 15 years in the area. Many people in Matara are angry he was thrown the door unfairly - to accomodate useless Govt stooges and "overseas visitors" now high-up in Govt.
One VIP Minister in the region is very unpopular with most voters, including government men. Another VIP injured and his son are well known to be deeply involved into drug-traffiking who could well have been the target for drug-related accounts-settling matters. There are also
sources within the army against their own hierarchy and the government for the continued what they claim as "un-necessary deaths" of Sinhala youth and soldiers in the war in North. It is very likely one or a combination of these forces was involved in the conspiracy. Although the LTTE is entirely capable of carrying out such an operation one should not give them too much credit for hits they probably have little to do with.
Of course, it certainly soothes the psyche of the ordinary Sinhalese to satisfy themselves "this is one further job of the hated LTTE" – because this is the tonic they are drugged with for so long. The reality is unless we settle the North East issue by the fair and just instrument of internal self-rule we will have many sources out to discredit and destroy the government. Worse things planned and carried out by Sinhala sinister forces are possible in the safe thought the Sinhalese will believe any bad deed can only come from the engineering of the LTTE. Also, if the LTTE were running for their life and in their last breadth since December where are the men, the resources and support base to carry out such an operation in the heart of the Sinhala land - the home
of the President and all those Rugunu heroes.

Oh! La La! Now the Govt and the Police say the "LTTE suicide bomber"

came in a VIP motorcade. Good Lord! How stupid can the process of lying take you? As I suggested, it is possible sources within the "system" carried out this ghastly act - as indeed that crime that took Gen Janaka Perera's life along with many others recently at Anuradhapura.

The struggle for political supremacy for the Matara District continues - with party politics, caste, the underworld and criminal gangs (that include the Sinhala extremist fringe and the drug-trafficers)all in a gloves-off fight to the finish. Interesting times are ahead.
