Feedback: Citizens speaking up on the polls from all over Sri Lanka

by Dushy Ranetunge

Below are comments by citizens from various parts of the country, which are of interest:

A Traffic Police officer near the Benthara River ; “The law must be applied to all equally. We stopped a container and found it full of Billboards in support of the President. It is illegal, but we could not do anything. If the OIC had ordered us to seize it, he may have been transferred to Batticaloa or some other place.”

“There was huge placard of the President put up and overnight someone had put paint on the face of the President obliterating it. It was not nice as it is our President so we tried to remove it, but we failed as it was welded and securely fixed.”

A citizen who lives near Kalpitiya : “ The President has never come this way, but the other day they all descended on us. The IGP and his group who accompanied the President visited a local hotel and had meals free of charge. The SSP was observed, reprimanding a local OIC for allowing some posters in support of Fonseka to be put up. He said that the OIC may have to provide explanations.”

The Grandson of a famous Sinhalese author “I received a text from the President wishing us a happy new year. I wonder whose money he is spending texting everyone.”

A Station Master of the Sri Lanka Railway “They have built a palace somewhere in the South, and they are not allowing anyone to even go there to see it. The corruption is unbearable ”

A rural housewife in Kandy “ They are only allowing the Presidents voice to be heard and blocking other points of view. This is not democracy”

A leading criminal lawyer from Nedimala: “I am voting for the lesser evil. We owe gratitude to the President. He took on the world”.

A businessman in Colombo “Fonseka has no party, so his only party is the army and he will bring in his buddies from the army into the government and we will have another Pakistan here. He is also too close to the red brigade”

A Political observer “We have the two worst candidates as a choice”

A Jaffna Tamil; “ Mahinda has treated us so badly, no one else can treat as any worse, so I am voting for Sarath”

A Sri Lankan Diplomat (Political appointment) : “Even the Tamil journalist and the newspaper guys say that it was Fonseka who was responsible for that murder. Do you know that he had asked a female soldier to kill a mosquito and when she failed to do it, he had ordered her to kill a hundred mosquitoes and show him."

A government official “The President wants charges against Kothalawala to be dropped”

A small shop owner in Thimbirigasyaya “They have withdrawn the army from Colombo and are deploying Police and STF. The government doesn?t trust the army”.

“We voted for him to save the country and now it?s a case of that paddy field is ours and this paddy field is also ours”

An academic from the University of Colombo (while packing her bags) “ I think Mahinda will win”

Another businessman “Our friends are now Libya, Iran and Burma. That says it all”

The only contestant in the Presidential election who has come out with a plan for a "National Government" is the General. I am not a supporter of the General or President Rajapakse, as I am not a Sri Lankan Citizen at this point of time, although I was formerly a Sri Lankan Citizen.

I love Sri Lanka and I will do as much as I can do for Sri Lanka and Sri Lankans. But at a time, after 30 years of war, Sri Lanka is at a junction, where the only goal should be to bring Peace by bringing in all Parties, Religions and Races together through a National Government format until all issues are solved.

Why not all the Presidential candidates have the same concept of forming a "National Government". Let all Presidential Candidates take up this challenge. Let Sri Lankan be ONE IDENTITY “SRI LANKAN” AND NOT SINHALESE, TAMILS, MUSLIMS OR BURGHERS. Let there be constitutional amendments made that there is only one identity “SRI LANKAN” Otherwise there is no meaning to WINNING THE WAR...SAME OLD..... SAME OLD.... WILL CONTINUE.

In my humble opinion President Rajapakse missed a golden opportunity to clean up the political act by forming a National Government. Still People of Sri Lanka prefer him to the General. Why not President Rajapakse make the move to inform Sri Lankans that he is committed to forming a “National Government” for a length of time until all the issues are solved. He can be magnanimous by offering the General a cabinet post in the National Government, after winning the election.

I am sure Sri Lankans will vote for President Rajapakse. There is no harm in changing the Agenda in the midst of an election, it only shows that President Rajapakse truly wants to do what the People of the Nation want and that he is a Honest Leader of the People, chosen by the People and for the People.

without a political leader nothing can do in the democratic country. He is hon.Mahinda rajapakse. He is face the world when world super powers blame on us time of blood sucker LTTE crushing from the our motherland. He is the real hero for sri lanka as a president to elect back. Mr.Sarath fonseke is a just group leader for Sl Army. Can i ask a ? He can win war with navy, air force and police support and who behind him to achive is goal? Thats Hon.MAHINDA RAJAPAKSE.

Whoever says what, racists approve wholeheartedly and enjoy thoroughly the killing of tamils.Gradually the Sri Lankan people have been guided along the path of hatred and mistrust and it applies to all races in the island. The selfish politicians from all sides fan the fire for their own advantage while 'condemning' racism publicly on political stage.Except for a few,the ordinary citizen doesn't see much the difference between two 'bloods'.But still they listen to those hypocrites. This ails the SL nation and there's no cure.

The President has lost all credibility due to his disregard for the laws of the land. We cant have a situation where the ruler and his dynasty have a free hand whilst the ordinary people have to suffer. People are being harrassed just because of their political affiliations. If this is not dictatorship what is. The abuse of office and wanton waste and misuse of public funds and resources continues even as he asks people to vote for him. Are people that stupid?

Mahinda is not a real leader for a country. He is a fit to be Pradeshiya Sabha member. That's all. Real leaders do not behave like the way he behaves.

MR stands for MODA RAJA.Instead of uniting the country after the war, he created a further division in SL. There is definitely no future for SL under his leadership.
SL and Sri lankans will be isolated from the rest of the world. These morons can not understand that SL is a third world country and we need the developed world to exist, let alone develop.

I think people looking for a change in government may vote for sarath. people already pay heavy price for corruption in mahinda government.

Posted by: sothy | January 3, 2010 04:11 AM

it is the people of Sro lanka who decide that wo should be there future leader.before choosing a leader they sould pay their careful attention to the follwing .

1.who can combat corruption which has become really a menace in Sri lanka.

2.Who can restore democracy in sri lanka which is a long felt need.

3.who will usher prosperity to Sri lanka in practical not just by words

4.who can safeguard the rights of people instead of suppressing them

5.Who is doing his best not for his him/herself but in the interest of country

The person who has really understood the situation of SL is a foreign journalist by the mname of Dyer . Please refer to that as it is well worth a read . The SL journalists ar eall biased and their views reflect who they support .

Any government in power, their leaders or the govt itself commit wrong doing whilst in power. This is a trait in democratical politics anywhere in the world.
Likewise, there are many wrong doings of the Rajapaksha regime that are exposed.
As such, why not give the president a second chance to come clean and move on.

Give the first timer, the General an opportunity, he too would inavitably make mistakes. Then do we have to wait for his second term to have them rectified.

Furthermore, the Gerneral appears to have had a plan at the back of his hand for a longtime to grab power by the look of things. He seem to have had his assosiation with the JVP as they were the voice ferocious party who urged the GOSL to fight to the end & Mangala being the initial architect.
Embrasing the UNP and others by the General were just for the votes.

What is more concerning is that, if the voters failed to vote the General into power, what he is going to do? The General is a person, who stops at nothing but achieve his goal at any cost.
I would hate to see the Generals next move with the JVP and the deserters, which will be very detrimental to the society and the country.

This is the dangerous unknown future the Country face with a defeated but determined General who is not use to tasting defeat.
I have no idea how the various Military Regiments would behave other than the Sinha regiment which has its loyaties to the General & the position of SLAF Roshan Gunatilleke with whom the General has maintained a close & a cordial relationship throughout.

Finally, the incumbant Government will be heavily dependant on the STF whom the General attempted to demoralise in the East and the Govt was of the view it was pro-UNP because of its origin.
But, it has a good leader Commadant Sarath Chandra who is a no nonsence deciplinarian, and had shown good investigative qualities when as an uniform Inspector.

Hope the Military will remain absolutely neutral for any progress to be seen in SL.

It is finally a relief for all the Sri Lankans that the more than two decade of war is over. Now the Sri Lankans needs to look into corruptions which is a major problem for our country which has effected immensely to our economy, developments etc. I'm pretty sure everyone who take a second to see the big picture will know who is the culprit.

Nodoubt about even the poor masses of the country:

if our country of which the majority lives under poverty levls, should be better develped in the near future, we need a leader or a political machinery one can feel that they are far from corruptions.

Less corruptions can only allow larges sums that are yearly allocated for the country´s developments process can easily be made used properly. Given the fact that the MR administration how dealt with the funds donated for the sake of Tsunami victims have been abused to a large amount as none of the govt officials can give an acceptable reasons according to Transparaency international´s reports lately.

Nor has president MR given a clear explanation about the matter yet. So, when using their votes on the 26 th, people of this country should better concentrate themselves for the future of them and the country rather than paving the way for another stagnated years.

Not only by words that easily go to the hearts of the masses of the country, using all tactics ... sinhala slangs as W weerawanse .. is used to use in his sorta dialogues or talks... people should not be manipulated only to grabe their innocient votes. Change is a must if we want to see a properous future in our mother lanka.

Mahinda could not control his best buddy, Doktor Merwin.
Mahinda could not control his own brother, Gota.
Mahinda could not control his army commender (when he was), Sarath.

Hmmm....

MR was not very diplomatic when it came to dealing with the diploMUTTS who came to ask for a ceasfire during the final phase of the WAR.
So the Armed Forces managed to end it forthwith.!!!
Which was great relief and the kind of diplomacy MR practiced did not win us a whole lot of friends but did the trick. So ends a chapter in the history.
He did it his way and it was fighting fire with fire.
Now there is a different fight which is not going to work with MR at the helm.why ?? he is over-qualified for the task.He has 40yrs experience in Politics!!!So he is immediately desqualifid for Curtailing Corruption, bribery and Stealing State Property as they are the very reasons why politicians came to power over the last 60 yrs.

here are few examples during MR term:

1. A poor farmer Co-operative of Thanamalwila, culitvated a state land( wasted and not cultivated) since 1962 after digging a canal for miles.Recently they were informed the land is illegally used by them and they were chased out. Then a regional Political leader had hired hands using tractors to till them for the coming season to be cultivated. The helpless poor farmers went to the Police station and they were told its the POWERS that BE doing it!!! and they are just looking up the sky and pray the gods to be of their help!!!!
Mind you these are the poor farmers who elected these folks( including MR) to be the statesmen/women.

2.The State property is being used to do election work and Police officers are instructed to guard the MR cut-outs.
Gooons of MPs are attacking peaceful marches of opposition political parties and the police is silent spectators.
( e.g. Kiribathgoda, Bandaragama incidents)

3. State Media is a fountain of Gobbelsian propaganda and all one-sided blare insulting the aptitude of the general viewer thus shunning them away with disgust.

4. The MPs jumping sides justify their moves with tall stories and go on the stage and relate utterly disgusting verbal attacks on oponents with malicious desregard to common decency( comnparing their senior citizen status) , filled with hatred an set the example to younger aspiring politicians to the cliche
'the bigger the proportion of unprincipaled ethos you follow the bigger the rewards are!!!!"

5. Governement appointments are good example of how power is abused by these strange creatures who squirm when confronted yet continue to do that.
The CGR examination for some staff recruitment during the X'mas rush is a case in point.

So above few examples right under the nose of MR regime shows MR is not up for THIS task of WAR on Corruption of all sorts rampant in the society.

I voted for MR last time around and I am happy it yielded results favourable to the Country this time I am voting for Genral Fonseka and I am convinced( with the track record) he has genuine desire to see this country in a superior pedestal and make the WAR victory he managed to deliver a meanigful one!!!!
