Gen. Sarath Fonseka Calls Charges Against Him 'Bogus'
by Robert Mackey
Four months ago, Gen. Sarath Fonseka was the commander of Sri Lanka’s army, hailed as a national hero by the country’s Sinhalese majority for putting an end to the long, bloody rebellion by Tamil separatists. Two months ago, after retiring, General Fonseka was barnstorming the country as a presidential candidate.
Today, having been arrested just days after failing to win the presidency, he sits in a small room at a military facility in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo, under armed guard, reduced to communicating with the world through handwritten statements smuggled out for him.
The video report also includes comments by Sarath N. Siva, a former chief justice of Sri Lanka’s supreme court, who told journalists on Monday that General Fonseka’s arrest was contrary to both Sri Lankan law and international conventions on human rights.

SF should be thankful to (god) GR for finding free time to practice meditation and yoga for the next 5 years ;)
Oh Yeah?? When Channel 4 became stupid Generals mouthpiece?? Funny, the accent they dub for the translation. (we remember the video…) Another infamous Channel 4 news with NO credibility!!
The dodgey deals of Fonseka Inc that ripped off the tax payers stink to high heaven.
Yet Fonseka acts like he is holier than thou.
I remember Fonseka calling Tamil Nadu pollies "Jokers". I wonder who is having the last laugh...
My advice to Fonseka supporters is to get a good "Kattadiya" from Ambalangoda and havea full" Bali Thovila" with all the bells and whistles to chase away the bad "Yakkas" in his head.
I am sure Gotta will make some room on compassionate grounds. It will also be a good opportunity for the Western NGO and Embassy support cast to watch some rare Srilankan culture.
ahh.. brings tears to my eyes ! no air conditioning, no hot water in a tropical country .. what more privations must this man endure, who received 1.8 million votes less at the election and yet believes he won the vote ?
This isd payback time SF paying now MR and group will pay soon.
Kalu Albert, I am sure Tamil Nadu 'jokers' are cracking a joke about him, and possibly at this whole squabling...and you think Gotta is going to be the winner??
Channel 4 has surpassed its earlier unprofessional coverage by utilising a Pakistani accent to indicate that it is Sarath Fonseka who is communicating. Who are they are trying to fool? This is tantamount to using a Bosnian accent to depict an English accent. This is pathetic and totally non-professional. This illustrates in no uncertain terms that to Channel 4 all South Asians are the same. This racial stereotyping is symptomatic of the disdain these agencies have for people in Sri Lanka. It displays their bigotry and the racial superiority complex that they eschew. It is in this context that these reports by Channel 4 must be viewed.
Their earlier videos regarding human rights violations too have been discredited and controversy still surrounds the acquisition of these from sources that have an axe to grind against the GOSL. Being one of smaller TV stations in the UK they tend to go for news items that are sensational to increase their viewing figures. It is also sweet revenge for their reporters as their visas were revoked for not adhering to conditions on which there were originally admitted.
Arunan, the diaspora and their proxies led by Sampathan surely did not come out the winners by backing this jerk.although the Tamil nadu "jokers" are having the last laugh.
Gotta is a patriot and his duty is to make sure jokers like these won't pop up even with the formidable backing of the anti government forces both local and overseas.
I know the Millibands and even Boon now are trying to harm him but nothing will happen because ,
* The majority of the population are behind Rajapaksas
* They now can distinguish between the patriots and the betrayers even with the latest offer of Samba rice at half price from Cyber Ranil.
SF's actions are similar to a caged animal who has been used to unprecedented freedom.
Channel 4 barking at the Moon.
