Tamil goons of ruling UPFA conduct terror campaign against newly elected Tamil National Alliance MP from Amparai (Digamadulla.
Podiappuhamy Piyasena the Tamil speaking Sinhala MP from TNA is confined to "house arrest" due to threats and unable to move about freely.
In a pathetic interview to BBC Tamil service a terrified Piyasena said gangs had chopped at the doors of his house with axes to instill fear.
The two police constables assigned to protect the MP had not stopped it & had advised Piyasena not to venture out due to safety reasons.
Piyasena said his supporters had been attacked in the presence of Police who had done nothing. He himself was unable to go out and help them.
Piyasena whose father was Sinhala & mother Tamil said that despite becoming an MP for the first time in his life he was under "house arrest".
Goonda supporters of Kumaraswamy Pushpakumar alias "Iniyabharathy" who contested & lost on the UPFA ticket are responsible for the intimidation.
Iniabharathi is President Rajapakses co-ordinator for Amparai district& a senior deputy of Vinayagamoorthy Muraleetharan alias "Col" Karuna.
TNA leader R. Sambandan has contacted top Police officials&urged immediate action to protect the MP & prevent further intimidatory violence.
Unconfirmed reports say 15 goondas allegedly involved in the terror campaign including the "right-hand" of Iniyabharathi have been arrested. [Click for uodates: http://twitter.com/dbsjeyaraj]

I believe it's one of many cases that is taking place
I can imagine the plight of innocent civilian who are living n these concentration camps in wanni when they voted for TNA
It is the duty of Tamil people in the area to protect
Mr Piyasena - whose election has exemplary features for the future - if the creation of a united and peaceful country is part of the agenda of this regime.
Here is once more example of the callous disregard of the Police to offer protection to a citizen under siege - in this instance one elected to Parliament.
The move by the ITAK/TNA to nominate him is an example of political maturity on their part - and for the Tamils in the area to vote for him more so. It is hoped those concerned throughout the country will take note of this useful development in Sinhala-Tamil relations.

It is welcome if action is taken by the Govt and Police to stop this type of Political Thuggery and Intimidation. It will give the signal to all that it is the dawn of a new era.

The president of SL should be solely responsible for this type of political tuggery as he has never punished his right hand thug Mervyn who openely shows how powerful he is and hails from King Dutugamunu. So his other goons are following the foot steps.
This should come as no surprise to anyone. This is part of the Rajapaksa regime's plan to intimidate and silence independent voices who stand for Tamil rights. And yet, only the TNA is asked to take a non-confrontational stance.
Podiappuhamy Piyasena appears to be a role model for future reconciliation between Sinhala and Tamil communities in Sri Lanka. A Sinhalese by birth and a Tamil by heart, elected by both Sinhala and Tamil voters.
We do not know him much but TNA has certainly set a precedence for future reconciliation process.
The problem is when a criminal government is elected back to power what can the citizens expect? Criminality by the state in a more organised form.
Can any democratic process lead to the criminalisation of a state? The answer is undoubtedly "yes".
Nigerian acting President Goodluck Jonathan, met President Obama this week. In an interview with BBC he said that the purpose of democracy is to prevent criminals from capturing power to govern any country.
As Nigeria is trying to progress in democracy Sri Lanka(SL) appears to be regressing.
In SL, the president, his cabinet and soldiers have committed Tamil genocide and war crimes, and are therefore unequivocally criminals but they have captured power.
Criminality was endorsed and purposefully supported by the Sinhala populace during the recent presidential and parliamentary elections.
The same criminal government is back in power and one spokesman had the audacity to ask the foreign countries to keep quiet and recognise the mandate given to this criminal government.
It is time for the International Community to take stern action against this terror state with economic sanctions, and bring the criminals to justice, as no justice will be forthcoming from inside.
The UN should immediately appoint credible persons to the UN panel on SL if it desires true democracy and prevent organised criminality.

That the notorious thug Mervin Silva was elected wih an increased majority points to the future of "politics by thuggery" by the Rajapakse regime and its paid henchmen, even among the tamils.
Piyasena is lucky to be alive.
There are shameless tamils who have sold their birthright for political patronage and perks.The 'minster' who was 'elected' by the captive islands electorate is a prime example.
To call them "Tamil Goons" is understatement. These are paramilitary men who enjoys government protection, arms, money and roaming about in the govt vehicles, armed to the teeth. No one noticed these paramilitary men until the MP was threatened. Even earlier MP Chandrahehru (or current MP) was stopped by these men not only working from his own electorate but even visiting his own people. Once in front of Police and body gurads Iniya Bharathy threatened him and Chandranehru and all armed escort returned at his orders! The case was brought to the courts but nothing happened. They set off a grenade in the lap of the Chandranehru's supporter last year and left to die. Last week, they threw molotov coktail to terrorise TNA activists. Now the youth are at the mercy of these heartless men. Please help them before it is too late. If Pillayan's men cannot be protected by the state in this area, who else can? These are the men who killed hundreds of surrendered Police officers during UNP time. Until President Rajapakse remove the safeguards and disassociate him from these Criminal elements, Iniya Bharathy will remain a cobra on Paramasivan's neck!

As many commented TNA has set precedence not by nominating Piyasena but choosing him to contest in a volatile electorate and win with the votes of all communities there.
This did not happen even to Lakshaman Kadirgamar who helped the state who pursuaded the IC state ( a State Sinhalese majority owns with a strong Sinhala armed forces ) to protect the unitary status, the majority inherited from the British since 1948 . He could have been fielded in Kandy or Colombo.Similar thing has happened to Professors Vitharane and GL Peries and some others.
Why Gothapaya who accused many, that they have blood in their hands and arrested and kept them in prison or detention, with out trial, and his brothers are silent on this type of pure law and order issue faced by an elected MP Piyasena and his supporters ? Why IC ( West and East ) are silent on this too ??
The country is in a mess, the President and his family members are behind these kind of operation. Unfortunately this will continue for long-time, until a military coup take place which is the only solution for this country now.
